Customs

Rwandans are known for their politeness, humility, and keen sense of community. Greetings are formal and respectful by handshake and in rural areas, a slight bow or nod. Silence is often a sign of respect, not discomfort, and conversations tend to be calm and measured. Travellers should learn a few words of Kinyarwanda.

Dress modestly, especially when visiting churches or government buildings. Ask permission before taking photographs, particularly of people or memorial sites. Rwandans value cleanliness and order, with littering frowned upon. Plastic bags are banned in Rwanda.

Electricity

Plug types: Type C, Type J (and occasionally Type G in some areas)

Voltage: 230 V, 50 Hz

Health

Malaria occurs widely throughout the country, including in Kigali.

Other insect-borne diseases also occur, including dengue, chikungunya, African tick-bite fever. To protect yourself from disease, ensure your accommodation is mosquito-proof, use insect repellent, wear long, loose, light-coloured clothing and consider taking medication to prevent malaria.

Waterborne, foodborne and other infectious diseases are common. Serious outbreaks sometimes occur. To protect yourself from illness: drink boiled water or bottled water with sealed lids, avoid ice cubes, avoid uncooked and undercooked food, such as salads and avoid contact with dogs and other mammals. Don't swim in fresh water to avoid exposure to waterborne diseases, such as bilharzia (schistosomiasis).

How to Get There & Getting Around

The main international gateway is Kigali International Airport (KGL). It is serviced by major international airlines such as RwandAir, Qatar Airways, KLM, Turkish Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines.

Once in Rwanda, getting around is relatively easy. Most tour operators use 4x4s due to the condition of rural roads. In Kigali, taxis are available and affordable, though it’s wise to agree on a fare beforehand or use a metered service if available.

While Rwanda has limited domestic flights, RwandAir does operate some internal routes, such as from Kigali to Kamembe near Nyungwe Forest. However, most tourist destinations are best reached by road. For example, the drive from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park in Musanze takes about 2.5 hours, while Nyungwe Forest is around 5-6 hours away. Akagera National Park is also accessible by a 2.5 to 3-hour drive.

Holidays & Festivals

  • National Heroes Day (1 February): honours individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to Rwanda’s history and development.
  • Tutsi Genocide Memorial Day (7 April): marks the beginning of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. It is a solemn national day of remembrance, reflection, and unity.
  • Liberation Day (4 July): commemorating the end of the genocide and the victory of the Rwandan Patriotic Army in 1994.
  • Umuganura (first Friday of August): Rwanda’s traditional harvest festival and one of the oldest and most culturally significant celebrations in Rwanda.
  • Kwita Izina (September/October): baby gorilla naming ceremony held annually near Volcanoes National Park, is a globally recognized conservation event. It celebrates Rwanda’s efforts to protect mountain gorillas and involves naming newly born gorillas.

Language

In Rwanda, the main language spoken is Kinyarwanda. Rwanda recognises four official languages: Kinyarwanda, English, French and Swahili.

Money, Tipping & Shopping

The official currency is the Rwandan Franc (RWF). US Dollars are accepted in some hotels and for gorilla trekking permits, but local currency is essential for most purchases. ATMs are available in major towns, and credit cards are accepted in upscale hotels and restaurants.

Tipping is not obligatory but is becoming more common in Rwanda. In restaurants, a 5–10% tip is appreciated. For guides and porters, especially during gorilla treks, tipping is strongly encouraged due to their expertise, typically US$10–$20 per person per day.

Prices are generally fixed in shops, but bargaining is acceptable in markets. Carry small denominations of RWF for local purchases. Plastic bags are banned in Rwanda, so bring a reusable shopping bag from home. Look for imigongo art (cow dung paintings), woven baskets, traditional drums, local textiles, and Rwandan coffee or tea. The Caplaki Craft Village in Kigali is a wonderful place to shop for artisan goods.
