Are wilderness safaris suitable for families and kids?

Wilderness tours can be a great option for families, but suitability varies depending on the destination and style of accommodation.

In some regions - particularly parts of Africa - families with children under 12 may need to book a private vehicle. Children under 6 generally aren’t able to join game drives, though many lodges offer short “bumble drives” as a fun alternative. Kids aged 6–12 may be allowed on full game drives at the guide’s discretion, while walking safaris are usually restricted to travellers aged 14–16 and above.

Family-friendly options include Authentic Southern AfricaMagical Madagascar Encounters, and Borneo Family Adventure, while Searching for Coastal Wolves is best suited to families with children aged 15+.

How do wilderness expeditions differ from regular tours?

Wilderness tours focus on experiences in remote natural environments, with more than half the itinerary dedicated to exploring untouched landscapes. While they may include some cultural or urban activities, the main purpose is engaging with nature—whether observing wildlife, trekking through forests, or exploring mountains.

For example, Grizzlies of the Great Bear Rainforest centres on wildlife observation in the pristine Canadian forests of British Columbia, our Authentic Gorillas and Chimps combines trekking and wildlife tracking in Rwanda and the Inca Trail Trek takes travellers on an unforgettable journey through historic Inca sites over four full days of trekking.

What should I pack for a wilderness adventure trip?

Across all regions, we recommend:

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Daypack for essentials like water, snacks, and a camera.
  • Camera or smartphone to capture your journey’s moments.
  • Reusable water bottle to reduce plastic waste.
  • Phrasebook or translation app for connecting with local communities.
  • Travel journal to record insights from your experiences.
  • Local currency for markets, gratuities, or artisan purchases.

By tailoring your packing list to your destination, season, and type of experience you’ll ensure your heritage tour is as comfortable, respectful, and enriching as possible.

Are wilderness tours suitable for solo travellers?

Absolutely. Wilderness tours provide safety, companionship, and expert support, making them ideal for solo adventurers as they connect with like-minded travellers and enjoy incredible experiences.

Examples include:

  • Insider Galapagos, offering guided wildlife excursions for solo travellers seeking immersive nature experiences.
