Conservation Collection: Namibia

After landing at Windhoek’s Hosea Kutako International Airport you will be welcomed by a private guide and transferred to the Okonjima Bush Camp, situated in the Okonjima Private Game Reserve and home of the AfriCat Foundation. Our safari activities begin this afternoon with one of Okonjima’s guides in the search of one of the collared but free roaming leopards while on a game drive. Return to the lodge after a sundowner drink in the bush to celebrate the day and enjoy a relaxing dinner. (D)

We begin with a morning game drive, learning more about the local ecosystem and some of the threatened species that live here. We will be on the lookout for the Reserve’s famous leopards, as well as giraffe, impala, oryx, zebra, cheetah and over 170 different species of bird.



This afternoon we make our way to the clinic where we will meet the local AfriCat Foundation veterinarian for an in-depth tour of the clinic and learn what a vital role it plays in the health management of the big cats at Okonjima. (B)(L)(D)

Today we step into the boots of the local AfriCat veterinarian. We will accompany the local team for the day doing typical tasks whilst learning about the health management of wildlife on the reserve.

Our experience includes hands-on, behind-the-scenes tasks such as inoculating and checking the health and wellbeing of carnivores on the reserve and in captivity. In the field we may check box traps for captured carnivores that need to be collared and if we are lucky, witness a full health check on one of the animals enabling us to get up close and personal. Today our journey continues to //Huab Under Canvas as we pass through small towns and farming communities towards the rocky outcrops of the stunning landscapes of Damaraland. Enjoy the afternoon at leisure before for sundowners around the campfire.



Situated in the //Huab Conservancy, the area is largely sparse semi-arid mountainous savanna, with wooded river valleys separating hills and plains and boasting some of the most magnificent views in Damaraland. With a number of natural springs providing water throughout the year, the area is home to desert adapted elephant, black rhino and general plains game, including kudu, giraffe, springbok, oryx, klipspringer and steenbok, as well as predators such as cheetah, leopard, spotted and brown hyena. Today we will spend an exciting and memorable morning with the Save the Rhino Trust - a rare opportunity to track some of the world’s only free roaming black rhinos. We will return to camp for a freshly prepared lunch and with time to relax at camp during the heat of the day. In late afternoon, head out for a scenic nature drive or walk to explore this vast and unique ecosystem. (B)(L)(D)

Rise early this morning and after a hearty breakfast we head out on a game drive with our expert guide in search of the incredible desert-adapted elephants. We will make our way through dry riverbeds and overhanging ana trees in search of these magnificent animals. We may also spot ostrich, oryx, springbok and other local fauna.



Later in the day, we will transfer to Camp Onduli where there will be time to relax before ending the day with a sundowner overlooking the stunning surrounding mountains. (B)(L)(D)

This morning we meet with a senior member from the Giraffe Conservation Foundation to learn about their work in Namibia.



In the afternoon, we visit the intriguing rock art engravings of Twyfelfontein – a UNESCO World Heritage Site that features some of Africa’s best preserved petroglyphs.
