The quieter, wetter seasons (March to May and October to November) bring around\u00a0<\/span><\/span>6-7mm of rain each day,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>which can make steep sections trickier, but the forests feel especially lush and alive. Regardless of when you go, temperatures\u00a0<\/span>remain<\/span>\u00a0mild for most of the year. Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda<\/span><\/b><\/h3>

As\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0see on\u00a0<\/span>this map<\/span><\/a>, Volcanoes National Park lies in Rwanda\u2019s far northwest, and it\u2019s about 105km from <\/span>Kigali<\/span><\/a> to the park headquarters area at Kinigi. There are 12 fully habituated gorilla families that the public are permitted to trek to, and alongside them, you might also be lucky enough to spot golden monkeys, critically endangered African forest elephants and some of the 187 recorded species of birds in this <\/span>UNESCO Biosphere Reserve<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Covering some\u202f160km\u00b2, the park protects part of the Virunga Mountains, a chain of\u202feight major volcanic peaks straddling Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, with five of them located inside the park itself.\u00a0\u00a0Elevation is high, with\u202fMount Karisimbi rising to 4,507m, so trekking routes can climb quickly through bamboo zones and montane rainforest into steep volcanic slopes<\/span>.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>

Spanning <\/span>321km\u00b2 <\/span>in southwestern Uganda,\u00a0roughly\u202f<\/span>460km\u00a0from<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Kampala<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0World Heritage-listed<\/span>\u202f<\/span>Bwindi Impenetrable National Park<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is home to almost half of the world\u2019s mountain gorillas. There are\u202f<\/span>15 habituated\u00a0gorilla\u00a0groups available for trekking<\/span>\u202fin the park, and it also supports <\/span>357 bird species<\/span>, forest\u00a0elephants\u00a0and a range of primates, including chimpanzees, blue monkeys and\u00a0L\u2019Hoest\u2019s\u00a0monkeys.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The key to its terrain lies in its name: dense vegetation, tangled undergrowth and steep hillsides combine to create a forest that once proved difficult to penetrate on foot. This is one of Africa\u2019s oldest rainforests, having survived the last Ice Age and existed as continuous forest for around\u202f<\/span>25,000 years<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Today, trekking routes wind through ridgelines and deep valleys, rising from lowland forest at about\u202f<\/span>1,160m<\/span>\u202fto Afromontane vegetation above\u202f<\/span>2,600m<\/span>. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park<\/span><\/a>\u00a0sits in southwestern Uganda, about\u202f<\/span>510km from Kampala<\/span>, on the border with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of\u00a0Congo. At just\u202f<\/span>33.7km\u00b2<\/span>,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0Uganda\u2019s smallest designated wilderness park, yet it protects a critical corner of the\u202f<\/span>Virunga Mountains <\/span>ecosystem. Trekking here centres on the <\/span>Nyakagezi\u00a0group<\/span>, Mgahinga\u2019s sole habituated gorilla family available for public trekking, which is known for ranging across the wider Virunga area.\u00a0Despite its compact size, Mgahinga\u2019s biodiversity is massive, supporting mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, forest elephants and\u202f<\/span>more than 115 bird species<\/span>.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0The landscape is dramatic and varied too, shaped by montane vegetation, bamboo forests and three extinct volcanoes,\u00a0with trekking routes spanning elevations from\u202f<\/span>2,227m to 4,127m<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Gorilla Groups You Can Trek to See <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Generally, mountain\u00a0gorillas live in close-knit family groups of\u202f<\/span>around 10-12 individuals<\/span>, although the <\/span>Diann Fossey Gorilla Fund<\/span><\/a>\u00a0notes that groups can range from\u202f<\/span>as few as two to more than 60<\/span>. Each group typically consists of related females, their\u00a0offspring\u00a0and younger males, and is led by a\u202f<\/span>dominant adult male, known as a silverback<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In Rwanda and Uganda, trekking is limited to only\u00a0<\/span>habituated groups<\/span>, as this allows researchers and authorities to closely monitor their health and ensure all encounters remain ethical. Whichever park you choose, these treks are <\/span>daytrips\u00a0only,\u00a0<\/span>and your time with the gorillas is strictly limited to\u202f<\/span>one hour<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
