This revered local symbol of freedom and fertility is famously monogamous, with breeding pairs nesting in tree hollows during the dry-season months of March to June. UNESCO World Heritage-listed\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Keoladeo\u00a0<\/span>Ghana\u00a0<\/span>National Park<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>\u2013 near\u00a0<\/span>Bharatpur<\/span>\u00a0and northern India\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Golden Triangle<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 holds more than 360 bird species across its wetlands, grasslands, and woodlands. In winter, tens of thousands of migratory bar-headed geese, greater flamingos, and, on rare occasions, endangered Siberian cranes arrive. But the stellar birding opportunities extend right across\u00a0<\/span><\/span>this vast country<\/span><\/span><\/a>, home to more than 1,300 species. Other hotspots include\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Kaziranga National Park<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0in Assam, which supports\u00a0<\/span>roughly 490<\/span>\u00a0species, among them the great hornbill, swamp francolin, greater adjutant, and Bengal florican. The\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Peruvian\u00a0<\/span>Amazon<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>harbours around 1,000 bird species, from tiny hummingbirds to predators like the harpy eagle, but macaws are\u00a0<\/span>the highlight<\/span>. More than a dozen species \u2013 including the scarlet, blue-and-yellow, and red-and-green macaw \u2013 gather in their hundreds at clay licks during the July to September dry-season peak.\u00a0<\/span>You\u2019ll<\/span> find them and more in the Tambopata National Reserve, a vital research hub for macaw behaviour, breeding, and conservation where 274,690ha of Amazonian forest, river, and oxbow lake habitats also support jabirus, black skimmers, hoatzins, umbrella birds, and <\/span>sunbitterns<\/span>. <\/span>This 19,804<\/span><\/span>km<\/span><\/span>2<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Northern Territory<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0site is a three-hour drive east of Darwin and offers a range of seasonal sightings. In the dry months (April to October), receding wetlands and shrinking waterholes at\u00a0<\/span>Mamukala<\/span>\u00a0and Yellow Water see vast flocks of magpie geese, comb-crested jacanas, brolgas, and jabirus. Then migratory shorebirds like\u00a0<\/span>oriental<\/span>\u00a0pratincoles, little curlews, and common greenshanks arrive in the wet season (November to March). Parrots such as red-tailed black cockatoos, rainbow bee-eaters, and azure kingfishers also add splashes of colour, and great bowerbirds, white-bellied sea-eagles and sulphur-crested cockatoos are among the other year-round residents.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In the far north-east of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>South Africa<\/span><\/span><\/a>, the Greater Kruger area covers around 20,000km\u00b2, including the\u00a0<\/span>legendary<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>national park<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>its\u00a0<\/span>adjoining private reserves. The \u2018Big Six\u2019 birds here are the martial eagle, lappet-faced vulture, saddle-billed stork, kori bustard, southern ground hornbill, and Pel\u2019s fishing-owl. But more than 500 bird species occur here, from the striking lilac-breasted roller to the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>yellow-billed\u00a0<\/span><\/span>hornbill (aka the \u2018flying banana\u2019)\u00a0<\/span>\u2013<\/span>\u00a0and rarities like the bateleur. Kruger also supports Africa\u2019s highest density of\u00a0<\/span>breeding pairs of raptors too, especially the African hawk-eagle, tawny eagle, and white-backed vulture. Private conservancies such as\u00a0<\/span>Kapama<\/span>\u00a0and Sabi\u00a0<\/span>Sabi<\/span>\u00a0offer the same avian diversity as the public<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>park, but often with fewer vehicles, night safaris, and on-site hides.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

More than 30 other seabird species also nest among the cliffs, including guillemots, northern gannets, black-legged kittiwakes, and northern fulmars. If\u00a0<\/span>you\u2019re<\/span>\u00a0self-driving,\u00a0<\/span>Heimaey<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 the only inhabited island \u2013 is reached by a 40-minute ferry from\u00a0<\/span>Landeyjah\u00f6fn<\/span>, which is<\/span>\u00a0conveniently connected from\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the Ring Road<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
