What is a total solar eclipse?\u00a0<\/h3>

A total solar eclipse happens when the sun, moon, and Earth are in perfect alignment. This occurs when the moon moves directly between the Earth and the sun, blocking the sun\u2019s light completely and casting a shadow over Earth for a brief period. During this temporary blackout, the sun\u2019s corona (outer atmosphere), stars and planets are clearly visible, making for a magnificent, otherworldly show.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

What makes this eclipse special\u00a0<\/h3>

This intriguing phenomenon occurs somewhere on Earth every 18 months or so. However, because the path of totality is very narrow \u2013 usually no more than 200km wide \u2013 it\u2019s a rare sight across the world. Parts of Europe had a total solar eclipse 27 years ago, but the last one visible in Iceland was way back in the summer of 1954. In August 2026, the path of totality will also pass over Greenland, Spain and Portugal, but Iceland will have the best view as the totality there will last two minutes and 18 seconds.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Earth\u2019s closest point to the maximum eclipse will be in western Iceland. While the island\u2019s weather is famously volatile, there\u2019s a good chance of clear skies in August and its lack of light pollution will enhance your view. The total eclipse will take place on <\/span>Wednesday 12 August 2026. The partial eclipse will begin at approximately <\/span>4.42pm <\/span>UTC<\/span>; then totality will begin at <\/span>5.47pm and last for more than two minutes, according to <\/span>Time and Date<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The path of totality will begin in Greenland, sweeping across Iceland\u2019s western regions, including the <\/span>Westfjords<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Brei\u00f0afj\u00f6r\u00f0ur Bay<\/span><\/a>, the <\/span>Sn\u00e6fellsnes<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Reykjanes peninsulas<\/span><\/a>, before moving through Portugal and Spain (although only a partial eclipse will be visible in other areas of Europe, North America and Africa). Is Reykjav\u00edk on the path?\u00a0<\/h3>

Iceland\u2019s capital<\/span><\/a> is slightly outside of the path\u2019s epicentre, so it\u2019ll experience the totality for about a minute. Just two hour\u2019s drive from <\/span>Reykjav\u00edk<\/span> and smack-bang on the path of totality, photogenic Sn\u00e6fellsnes will be the prime spot to witness the astronomical wonder. This area is often referred to as \u2018Iceland in miniature\u2019 due to its concentration of natural attractions, including <\/span>Kirkjufell Mountain<\/span><\/a>, the <\/span>Sn\u00e6fellsj\u00f6kull Glacier<\/span><\/a>, the Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall, and charming villages like Stykkish\u00f3lmur, Arnarstapi and Hellnar. While Iceland\u2019s west will afford the best views, at least part of the eclipse will be visible across the country, with the sun appearing as a barely-there crescent in most other places. Even in summer, Iceland\u2019s weather can be unpredictable \u2013 but as the saying goes, there\u2019s no such thing as bad weather, just bad gear, so you\u2019ll need to be ready for anything. A waterproof, windproof jacket and trouser combination creates a protective shell against squalls and waterfalls, and you can layer up beneath it: start with a moisture-wicking base layer, then add a fleece or insulated mid-layer for warmth. Plus, waterproof hiking boots, trekking poles, polarised sunglasses, hat, neck gaiter, gloves, sunscreen, swimwear and lip balm will all keep you covered and comfortable as terrains and conditions change.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In August, western Iceland offers mild summer weather and long daylight hours, with the sun setting late in the evening.
