The 2021\u00a0UN Climate Change Conference<\/a>,\u00a0taking\u00a0place this\u00a0November in Glasgow\u00a0(COP26),\u00a0aims to\u00a0be a\u00a0\u2018pivotal moment in the fight against climate change,\u2019\u00a0poised to usher\u00a0in\u00a0a decade of\u00a0united and\u00a0urgent action to cut greenhouse gas emissions.\u00a0For nearly 30 years, the UN has been bringing together almost every country at\u00a0its annual climate summit\u00a0called COP (\u2018Conference of the Parties\u2019).\u00a0It was here that\u00a0the\u00a0Paris Agreement<\/a>\u00a0was\u00a0launched\u00a0in 2015\u00a0and\u00a0now,\u00a0with the window quickly closing\u00a0to meet the\u00a0Agreement\u2019s\u00a0goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees\u00a0above pre-industrial levels,\u00a0the\u00a0plans\u00a0first\u00a0presented\u00a0in the Paris Agreement must be taken further.\u00a0<\/p>

Further to\u00a0declaring a climate emergency\u00a0and\u00a0joining\u00a0Tourism Declares, a community of\u00a0more than 300\u00a0organizations\u00a0in travel and tourism\u00a0dedicated to\u00a0the urgent\u00a0call\u00a0to cut emissions in half by 2030,\u00a0TTC and its family of brands\u00a0are\u00a0pleased to announce\u00a0the\u00a0signing of the\u00a0Glasgow Declaration<\/a>.\u00a0This Declaration,\u00a0formed\u00a0collaboratively between\u00a0the\u00a0UNWTO<\/a>,\u00a0UNEP<\/a>,\u00a0VisitScotland<\/a>,\u00a0Tourism Declares<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Travel Foundation<\/a>, unites our sector in\u00a0a shared\u00a0commitment to accelerating climate action\u00a0towards 1.5 degrees.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

In order\u00a0for\u00a0communities\u00a0to benefit from travel & tourism and vice versa, we must assure\u00a0their\u00a0health\u00a0and protection, a critical fact that\u00a0puts\u00a0destination protection\u00a0as the shared responsibility of our\u00a0industry.\u00a0While the climate emergency is\u00a0very\u00a0real,\u00a0we know\u00a0that it\u2019s not too late to take action and change\u00a0our\u00a0course,\u00a0though\u00a0as the recent\u00a0IPCC<\/a>\u00a0report highlighted, that window is closing.\u00a0The Glasgow Declaration\u00a0then, is a call for action from the tourism sector, one which seeks to unite\u00a0the industry\u00a0through\u00a0supporting\u00a0organizations\u00a0to\u00a0build an effective path forward\u00a0\u2013 because declaring a\u00a0commitment to\u00a0climate action\u00a0is\u00a0meaningless unless\u00a0followed\u00a0with swift\u00a0action.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

As outlined in the One Planet Vision for a Responsible Recovery of Tourism from COVID-19, committing to and planning for a green recovery offers us a unique opportunity to transform the sector in line with the objectives of the Paris Agreement. If we can move rapidly away from carbon- and material-intensive ways of delivering visitor experiences, instead prioritising\u00a0community\u00a0and ecosystem wellbeing, then tourism can be a leader in transforming to a low-carbon future.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

In 2020,\u00a0TTC\u00a0launched its new\u00a05-year sustainability strategy,\u00a0How We Tread Right<\/a>\u00a0(HWTR)\u00a0which\u00a0committed\u00a0the global group of travel\u00a0brands<\/a>\u00a0to becoming a carbon neutral business by 2030 or sooner.\u00a0While\u00a0all 11\u00a0sustainability\u00a0goals\u00a0outlined by\u00a0HWTR contribute to\u00a0addressing\u00a0TTC\u2019s\u00a0carbon footprint\u00a0and\u00a0prioritize\u00a0restoring\u00a0the\u00a0balance\u00a0of nature,\u00a0our\u00a0specific\u00a0action\u00a0on\u00a0greenhouse gas\u00a0emissions is clear\u00a0and prescriptive\u00a0and outlined\u00a0in\u00a0TTC\u2019s\u00a05-point\u00a0Climate Action Plan.\u00a0<\/p>

Our plan\u00a0outlines a clear\u00a0approach\u00a0to achieving\u00a0our goal of carbon neutrality\u00a0that reflects the Glasgow Declaration\u2019s five pathways\u00a0to\u00a0Measure,\u00a0Decarbonise, Regenerate, Collaborate\u00a0and\u00a0Finance.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

To understand and manage, you must measure. So first and foremost, we\u2019ve committed to measuring the emissions from our business and trips. We measure our business emissions from offices, owned facilities and accommodations, hotels, ships, fleet, and employee business air travel. The carbon footprint of all trips across TTC brands, including all transportation, accommodations and meals, are measured through a custom trip calculator we developed with external experts.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

We\u2019re committed to building on\u00a0carbon\u00a0reduction efforts\u00a0to date\u00a0and setting ambitious targets by mid-2022.\u00a0To\u00a0support the world\u2019s progress towards limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees, we must ensure we explore every opportunity to drawdown our emissions and set ourselves on a path to net zero. This includes securing and generating renewable energy\u00a0and assessing alternative\u00a0fuels.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Through\u00a0TreadRight, we\u2019re investing in new, nature-based technologies to remove excess carbon from the atmosphere. These innovative solutions\u00a0have\u00a0massive potential to mitigate climate change and need our support to accelerate and scale as quickly as possible. In 2021,\u00a0TreadRight\u00a0invested in\u00a0GreenWave<\/a>, a regenerative ocean farming organization, and\u00a0Project Vesta<\/a>, using naturally\u00a0occurring olivine rock to permanently store carbon on the ocean floor.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

As an interim solution to address TTC\u2019s unavoidable emissions, we will purchase carbon credits, including\u00a0rolling out\u00a0carbon neutral trips between 2022 \u2013 2030. In partnership with\u00a0South Pole<\/a>, a leading offset provider, TTC will purchase verified carbon credits to offset emissions from our offices and employee business air travel.\u00a0

The last point of our Climate Action Plan is to\u00a0Evolve,\u00a0because\u00a0we\u00a0know we\u00a0can\u2019t do\u00a0this\u00a0alone. That\u2019s why signing onto Tourism Declares and the Glasgow Declaration\u00a0is important.
